Completely Handmade Crystal

We produce our products entirely by hand in France and Italy. Each piece undergoes several traditional stages of processing, making them unique. Crystal products become expensive for a number of reasons related to materials, production processes, and exclusivity.

The main factors explaining the high cost of handmade crystal:

1. High-quality materials

Crystal is not just glass; it contains lead oxide, which gives the material greater density, brightness, and the ability to refract light. In premium products, the percentage of lead oxide can be higher, making the crystal more brilliant and durable.

2. Hand craftsmanship

All products are made by hand, ensuring exceptional quality and attention to detail. The process includes blowing, cutting, polishing, and decorating, which requires a high level of skill, making each item unique.

3. Labour-intensive process

Crystal processing is a long and complex process. It can take several weeks or months to create a single piece. Cutting and polishing require precision and experience, as any mistake can spoil the item.

4. Decoration and exclusive elements

Many premium pieces are adorned with gold, platinum, or hand engraving, which significantly increases their value. Rare materials, such as coloured glass or precious metals, are sometimes used, making the items even more exclusive.

5. Limited editions and exclusivity

Handmade crystal items are produced in limited quantities or to order, which adds exclusivity and increases their value.

6. Optical properties and aesthetics

Crystal has a unique ability to refract light beautifully, creating a “sparkle” effect. This makes crystal pieces more attractive than ordinary glass, especially with complex shapes and facets.

The know-how and the key stages of handmade production

Our Craftsmanship Process:

CRYSTAL BLOWING

Crystalgl blowing – artisans manually blow molten crystal, creating the basic shape using glass-blowing tubes. The journey of crystal begins with its design, where the initial sketches of each collection are conceived. The magic of crystal-making unfolds when molten material, heated to a glowing 1200°C (2192°F), is skillfully blown into shape. Our artisans continuously rotate the blowpipe, ensuring perfect symmetry and laying the foundation for each piece. This process is the heart of crystal craftsmanship, where the fusion of pure minerals, fine sand, and fire creates a material that offers unparalleled light refraction and brilliance. Crystal, born from the elemental forces of earth and fire, stands as one of the most poetic and evocative materials on Earth.

The journey begins with the design, where the first sketches of each collection take form. The magic of crystal-making starts when molten material, heated to 1200°C (2192°F), is blown into shape. Our artisans rotate the cane continuously, achieving perfect symmetry and laying the foundation for each crystal piece. This stage exemplifies the core of crystal craftsmanship—a harmonious blend of pure earth, fine sand, and fire to create a material that beautifully refracts light.

CRYSTAL CUTTING

Freehand cutting is what gives each crystal piece its unique character. This delicate process is performed when the crystal has cooled after being blown and shaped entirely by hand. Using sandstone or diamond grindstones rotating at high speeds, artisans shape the rough outline of the piece. A gentle stream of water, enriched with fine sand, continuously cools the crystal and strengthens the cutting process. The result is a wide array of intricate patterns—from timeless cuts like diamonds, stars, and bevels to contemporary designs. Each piece demands a blend of precision and expert craftsmanship, as the material’s strength requires both meticulous detail and forceful execution.

Cutting – after shaping, the item is cut by hand to achieve the desired form. This requires a high level of precision and skill.

Our craftsmen, in addition to traditional cutting techniques such as Flat Cut, Star Cut, Panel Cut, Hobnail Cut, and Crosshatch Cut, also perform:

  • Diamond Cut – a cutting technique where diamond tools create multiple facets on the surface of the crystal, enhancing light refraction and reflection.

  • Brilliant Cut – this technique is similar to Diamond Cut but involves a greater number of smaller facets, enhancing light play and creating an intense sparkle effect.

  • Edo Kiriko – a traditional Japanese glass-cutting technique that creates delicate geometric patterns, often using two-layer glass where the coloгred upper layer is cut away to create contrasting designs.

Some collections produced in France, in addition to traditional French techniques, also incorporate elements of Japanese craftsmanship, such as Edo Kiriko—a traditional glass engraving technique that originated in the Edo period in the early 19th century. “Kiriko” translates as “cutting,” and this technique involves manual engraving on glass using diamond tools to create intricate geometric patterns.

The distinctive features of Edo Kiriko:

Precise geometric patterns, such as stars, diamonds, and lines, cut on the surface of the glass.

  • Completely handmade, where each pattern is manually created, making each item unique.

  • The use of coloured glass, often in a two-layer format: the upper coloured layer is removed, revealing the clear glass underneath, creating contrasting patterns.

The combination of French craftsmanship with the Japanese Edo Kiriko technique allows for collections with a unique aesthetic and innovative play of light, emphasising the refinement and exclusivity of each piece.

Once blown and shaped, the crystal moves on to the cutting phase. This delicate work is done by hand, using high-speed sandstone or diamond grindstones. Each cut is executed with expert precision, whether it’s traditional diamonds and stars or modern geometric patterns, giving the pieces their distinct beveled look and elegant finish.

CRYSTAL POLISHING

After cutting, the crystal undergoes polishing to restore its brilliance by eliminating tool marks and achieving its signature smooth, lustrous finish. We utilize two polishing methods: chemical polishing, where the piece is submerged in a hydrofluoric acid bath to strip away imperfections and enhance clarity, and mechanical polishing, where artisans use specialized polishing wheels to refine the surface. These processes ensure the crystal is smooth, clean, and reflective, preparing it for the final stages of gilding or engraving.

COLOUR-LAYERED CRYSTAL

Our craftsmen excel in creating colour-layered crystal in a stunning palette of 14 different shades, ranging from classic to modern. Producing such intricate crystal pieces involves a complex process requiring specialized skills passed down through generations. Until the 19th century, the knowledge of colored crystal was primarily centered in Bohemia, the historical hub of glassmaking. In the following century, these techniques found their way to France and Italy.

To craft colour-layered crystal, artisans use a pot furnace with multiple crucibles containing metallic oxides (such as nickel, copper, chromium, or cobalt), which are added to the traditional crystal mixture. Two layers of crystal—one clear and one colored—are fused together, creating a distinctive two-tone effect. When the piece is cut, the outer colored layer is removed to reveal the clear crystal beneath, giving it its characteristic contrast and depth.

CRYSTAL SANDBLASTING

Crystal sandblasting is a method of frosting the surface to achieve a matte finish. This process, performed when the crystal is cold, involves projecting fine sand at high pressure onto masked areas of the piece. The mask, digitally designed and produced in-house, isolates specific parts of the crystal while the sand erodes the exposed surface, creating depth and texture. Sandblasting, first developed in the 1870s, remains an essential technique in contemporary crystal artistry.

CRYSTAL GILDING

Gilding is the most intricate and time-consuming stage of the crystal-making process, often involving more than 20 steps to achieve a flawless finish. Our expert decorators begin by applying a delicate decal of the desired design to the crystal. The piece is then carefully masked, leaving only the design exposed. Gold or platinum is meticulously brushed by hand into the engraved sections with precision. Once applied, the piece is baked to fuse the gilding with the crystal, followed by a mineral polishing technique to enhance the luster of the precious metals. This process gives the product a radiant, luxurious finish. We proudly offer five exquisite finishes: rose gold, matte gold, shiny gold, platinum, and black chrome.

BRONZE WORK

The bronze elements are crafted in partnership with local smelting plants in the Grand Est region of France. After the bronze components are cast, they are assembled and welded by master bronze workers. The final structure is then dipped in 24-carat gold or platinum for a magnificent finish. This fusion of bronze and crystal results in a stunning centerpiece that balances both durability and refined artistry.
